CWU to Ballot for Strike Action
The Communication Workers Union has agreed to hold a ballot for industrial action with Royal Mail workers.
• Notice will be issued to Royal Mail on Monday July 3.
• Ballot papers will be despatched to CWU members from Monday July 10.
• Ballot will close Monday July 31.
• Ballot affects 136,000 CWU members.
Notice to the employer has been set to demonstrate the union’s determination to reach an acceptable negotiated agreement. The dispute covers Royal Mail’s imposition of pay and Royal Mail’s future plans, including 40,000 job losses and changes to ways of working.
General Secretary Billy Hayes said: “Imposing an un-agreed pay rise was always going to create conflict. This is a serious decision, but the union has provided a window of a week for Royal Mail to use their energies to reach a settlement with our negotiating team.”
Dave Ward, Deputy General Secretary, said: “Royal Mail should be under no illusion that the CWU is prepared to take decisive action to defend the pay and future job security of our members. We have allowed 4 weeks so far to reach agreement since our annual conference decision and now we are giving a further week. I would suggest that Royal Mail seize this opportunity and work hard to reach an acceptable agreement or a strike ballot will take place.”
